GIVE FREELY
There are many ways to give.
Volunteer; donate your time
Advise; share your skills
Lead; start something
Set an example; everyday
Raise awareness; advocate
We often find ourselves locked in our own world, unable to break free of the disappointment, frustration, problems and pressures of our lives.
They seem insurmountable and overwhelming. Giving is an antidote; a way for us to center ourselves and put much of what consumes us into perspective. Giving is grounding, it makes us feel a part of a larger context, and individually gives us a sense of purpose. We learn so much about ourselves and what really matters by giving.
Yet, our calendars are booked and in the daily rush we overlook opportunities that are right in front of us. Helping an elderly man carry his groceries, donating blood during a lunch break, bringing food to the local pantry, serving a meal at a shelter. It’s not just about giving money—which is always needed and welcome—but the real benefit comes when you actually step outside of yourself and engage with other people.
“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” ―Winston S. Churchill
The Mayo Clinic cites actual physical benefits to volunteering. Research has shown that volunteering leads to lower rates of depression, especially for individuals 65 and older, and lowers stress levels. Giving of your time to an organization or project that you care deeply about, not only helps you build a support system, it builds new relationships, and according to some studies may even help you live longer.
Lending a hand can mean so many different things, so the important thing to remember is you can scale your “helping” according to your age, ability, availability, and means. If you have the time and are looking for structure, there are so many organizations to turn to for guidance and opportunity including; volunteer.gov, volunteermatch.org, and idealist.org just to name a few. But there are other ways to think about giving. Sharing your skills and expertise with a non-profit or organization that supports a cause or issue that you care about, is a much needed way to give. Raising awareness, through social media or other channels, of important issues or fundraising by participating in charitable events are both ways to give of yourself.
Each and every day we have the opportunity to give; to set an example for ourselves, and those around us, of selfless behavior that not only makes another person feel valued, but also fills up our own lives.
